Lancashire Archives holds millions of documents, ranging from formal official records to personal letters and diaries, which tell the story of Lancashire and the people who have lived there over the last 900 years. Everyone is welcome to research the books and documents which may hold the key to their family history, telling stories they never knew and answering questions they never thought to ask. The collections include wills, marriage bonds, electoral registers, police personnel records, business and estate collections as well as personal letters and diaries.

Parish Records: before civil registration began in 1837 our ancestors’ key events were typically recorded by the church rather than the state. Parish records are the best way of discovering births, marriages and deaths before the mid-19th century,and remain an important source after this.
